I’m heartbroken. I’ve been struggling for a week about what to write in response to the devastation that Hurricane Irma caused throughout the Caribbean and southeastern United States. I’m speechless. I said to my husband the week before the storm hit us in Florida that Irma is destroying every place that I love.
It’s heartbreaking to see the destruction from just one storm. Take a look at the Caribbean Buzz Helicopters FB page for photos and videos of the destruction in the Caribbean. Or check out the NOAA Hurricane Irma Imagery. You can see every single tree stripped of it’s leaves and piles of rubble from houses that were torn apart. Hurricane Irma wrecked havoc and destruction on every country she touched. After seeing the devastation that Irma brought to the Caribbean and hearing stories from friends on the islands, I was scared about the destruction that she would bring to Florida. For the first time in recent history, my county called for an evacuation and we left. I’m incredibly thankful that we were spared the worst damage from the storm, but my heart breaks for the people of the Caribbean and southern Florida.
Florida is home and the Caribbean is like a second home to me. I’ve published extensively about St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. I still have four posts from my trip this summer waiting to publish. While I don’t know what this means about the future of some of my favorite travel destinations, I do know that people need help now. These people lost their homes, businesses and jobs. They are still without power and basic communications. And, now they have another major hurricane headed their way. It is a long road ahead. Can you help?
Based on my research over the past week and discussions with people on the islands, I’ve rounded up a list of reputable organizations providing relief. The list below includes organizations that are already working to provide relief to those affected by Hurricane Irma in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. Also, I’m looking for a few reputable local organizations providing relief to those in South Florida. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
