Let me introduce you to one of my favorite easy desserts. All you need is pineapple, brown sugar, cinnamon and butter. The pineapple is fried in a skillet to create a delicious tropical treat anytime.

It tastes similar to grilled pineapple, but since it is sautéed in a skillet, it can be made year round.

While this dish is typically served as a dessert, it would also taste great as a side for savory dishes like ham or grilled teriyaki chicken. Add cooked rice for a delicious meal.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • You can make cinnamon fried pineapple any time of the year.
  • It’s ready in 10 minutes or less.
  • Enjoy it savory or sweet!

Ingredients You Need

You will only need four ingredients for this easy dessert recipe.

All of the ingredients for fried pineapple on a white countertop including a whole pineapple, butter, cinnamon and brown sugar.
  • Pineapple: Choose fresh pineapple for the best flavor. You can use canned pineapple, but the flavor will not be the same.
  • Unsalted Butter: If you substitute with salted butter, it will add a slightly salty flavor. Use plant based butter to make this recipe vegan.
  • Brown Sugar: Light brown sugar is preferred.
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla Ice Cream (optional)

Tips for choosing a pineapple: You want to choose a pineapple that is ripe and fresh. The leaves should look fresh and it should be yellow and green. Avoid a brown pineapple as it usually means it’s going bad. If you smell the bottom of the pineapple, it should have a sweet pleasant smell.

How to Make Fried Pineapple in a Skillet

This recipe comes together in less than 10 minutes!

Pieces of cut pineapple on a cutting board with a sharp knife.
  1. Cut the pineapple into small bite-sized pieces. I use a Pineapple Corer and Slicer to cut the pineapple into perfect round rings. Then I cut the rings into four or six pieces. (The pineapple slicer is one of my favorite kitchen tools because it’s quick, easy and works perfect every single time.)
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the pineapple, brown sugar and cinnamon.

3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter.

4. Once the butter is melted, add the pineapple pieces in a single layer and fry for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side.

Serve the fried pineapple with a scoop of ice cream. Sprinkle coconut flakes on top for extra tropical flavor.

The prepare pineapple in a skillet for cooking in the butter.

Recipe Tips

  • Serve it sweet – Spoon the pineapple chunks over a bowl of ice cream and sprinkle pineapple flakes on top. Or serve it over pancakes for a sweet way to start the day.
  • Serve it savory – Serve the pineapple with ham or pork chops. It also tastes great as a side to Asian dishes or barbecue foods. We also love serving it with stir fry red bell pepper and onions or other vegetables.
  • Add other flavors: You can substitute the brown sugar for honey or use half honey and half brown sugar. If you like spicy flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder.
  • Cut the pineapple in advance to save time.
  • Make it ahead: You can prepare the entire recipe in advance and serve it cold or reheat to serve it warm.

Storage

Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Fried pineapple tastes great as leftovers. You can reheat or serve it cold. Either way, it’s delicious.

It’s the perfect addition to an ice cream sundae or served savory as a side dish to chicken, pork or steak. Or add it to a salad for sweet flavor.

Two plates with fried pineapple and a scoop of vanilla ice cream plus coconut flakes. Forks sit to the side of the plates with a white napkin.
