Why You’ll Love This Strawberry Sangria

  • Fresh and Fruity Flavor: The homemade strawberry syrup packs in real strawberry flavor, which pairs perfectly with white wine.
  • Minimal Prep: Just 10 minutes of prep and a little chill time is all you need.
  • Customizable: Choose your favorite white wine or even rosé—this recipe is easy to adapt to your personal taste.
  • Perfect for Entertaining: Make a big batch in a large pitcher or punch bowl and let guests serve themselves.
  • Ideal for Warm Weather: This is one of our favorite drinks to sip on when the weather heats up.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Fresh Strawberries – Use ripe, sweet strawberries to make a flavorful simple syrup and for garnish. Organic berries work best for the freshest, juiciest results.

Sugar – Classic granulated sugar is used to make the syrup and bring out the natural sweetness of the strawberries.

Water – Combined with sugar and strawberries to create the homemade syrup base.

White Wine – A crisp dry white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio works best. You can also use sweet white wine if preferred.

Sparkling Water – Added just before serving for fizz. Seltzer water or even club soda works great. For a sweeter twist, try ginger ale or sparkling rosé.

Sliced Strawberries – Optional, but highly recommended for garnish and extra fruity flavor.

Step-by-step making strawberry syrup for sangria.

How to Make Strawberry Sangria

  1. Start by making the homemade strawberry syrup. In a large saucepan, combine your halved strawberries, sugar, and water. Bring it just to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved. Then, remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely.
  2. Once cooled, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve set over a bowl. Press down on the solids to extract every last bit of syrup—this should yield about 3 cups. Discard the remaining solids.
  3. Pour the syrup into a 2-quart pitcher and stir in your white wine. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least a few hours (or up to 24 hours) so the flavors can meld together.
  4. Right before serving, add the sparkling water and give it a gentle stir. Pour into glasses over ice or serve chilled with sliced strawberries for a beautiful, refreshing drink.

Expert Tips and Substitutions

  • Don’t skip the resting time: Letting the sangria rest in the fridge for a few hours helps all the fruity flavors blend together, creating a more balanced, delicious sangria recipe.
  • Wine Choices: If you prefer a slightly sweeter sangria, opt for Moscato or a fruity rosé. For something drier, stick with Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.
  • Add Citrus: Add lemon slices or a splash of orange juice for a bright citrus twist.
  • Liqueur Add-Ins: Add 1/4 cup of orange liqueur like triple sec or Grand Marnier for a bolder cocktail flavor.
  • Berry Boost: Toss in other fresh berries like raspberries or blueberries to amp up the fruity flavor.
  • No fresh strawberries? Frozen strawberries work in a pinch—just be sure to thaw them first.

Storing and Making Ahead

  • Make-Ahead Tips: You can prep the strawberry syrup up to 3 days ahead. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • Storing Leftovers: Store sangria in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. Stir well before serving.
  • Batch It: This recipe doubles easily if you’re serving a crowd—just use a punch bowl or larger pitcher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of wine?
Yes! While dry white wines like Sauvignon Blanc are most common, you can use sweet white wines, rosé, or even a fruity red like Pinot Noir.

Do I need to use sparkling water?
Not at all. You can swap it for club soda, ginger ale, or even a splash of lemon-lime soda for a sweeter finish.

Can I make this non-alcoholic?
Absolutely! Skip the wine and use white grape juice or apple juice in its place. Still sweet, fruity, and festive!

Can I add other fruits?
Yes—sliced citrus fruits, apples, and berries all make great sangria add-ins.

What’s the best way to serve sangria?
Chilled in a wine glass or over ice in a tall glass. Garnish with fresh fruits for extra flair.
