How do you make the best turkey chili?

Turkey chili tastes great when it’s cooked with hearty ingredients like tomatoes, sweet potato or quinoa. I love cooking my Hearty Turkey Chili with onion, pepper, spices, tomatoes and kidney beans.

With a chili recipe, it’s easy to add or subtract a few ingredients to suit your taste. With this instant pot turkey chili recipe, I substituted and added a few ingredients like sweet potato and quinoa to give a hearty twist on the classic chili recipe. It creates a nutrient dense meal with a lot of added fiber and protein.

How long to pressure cook chili in Instant Pot?

Cooking chili in a pressure cooker is easy. Saute the turkey in the instant pot until browned. Add the onions, pepper, sweet potato and quinoa and saute for 6 to 8 minutes or until the onions are translucent. Add the remaining ingredients to the instant pot and cook on manual high for 20 minutes. Let the pot naturally release and then enjoy. You can also cook chili in a crockpot.

ALTERNATE COOKING INSTRUCTIONS: You can cook this chili in a slow cooker instead of the Instant Pot. First, brown the turkey in a skillet on the stove. Add the onions and cook until softened. Transfer to a slow cooker and add the remaining ingredients. Cook on low for 5 to 6 hours or high for 3 to 4 hours, or until the potatoes are tender.

How to make a chili bar

I love to make a chili bar with a lot of different toppings so each person can make their own bowl to suit their taste. I always include sour cream, jalapeños, avocado, cilantro, tortilla strips, hot sauce and saltines for guests to help themselves to their favorite toppings. Because this meal cooks in the Instant Pot, it’s even easier and quicker!

Make plans to make a large batch of this hearty chili to share with your family and reheat throughout the week. I promise that this recipe will become a staple in your home. You can even adapt the recipe to be made in the slow cooker by browning the turkey in advance before adding everything to the slow cooker. And best off all, this instant pot turkey chili tastes great as leftovers!

  1. WOWWWWW!!! This was SO delicious. I donโ€™t care for chiliโ€ฆ or sweet potatoes so I was taking a risk in this but oh my goodness was this absolutely incredible. I used my Ninja Foodi so it was a one pot recipe, making clean up easy. This is going on our rotation for sure!

  2. Made this today even though it isn’t your typical spring/summer dish. It was wonderful and very easy! I used frozen chopped sweet potatoes and it still turned out perfectly. I’ll certainly be making it again!

    1. Hi Ken! I updated the post with instructions for cooking in a crockpot. You need to brown the turkey and onion in a skillet on the stovetop first. Then transfer to a slow cooker and add the remaining ingredients. Slow cook on low for 5 to 6 hours or high for 4 to 5 hours, or until the potatoes are tender. Enjoy!

  3. Wow… Iโ€™m truly speechless at how tasty this is! I am not crazy about quinoa, so I was hesitant at first, but it turned out great! I will be making this a lot this fall/winter! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Do the nutrition facts for this recipe account for the avocado, sour cream, and cheese that’s suggested for serving? Also, how large is one serving size? It says it’s 261kcal and the recipe yields 6 servings but I’m not sure what the serving size is. I am trying to be more conscience of the calories I intake per meal. I’ve made the recipe a few times and I LOVE it. I add some curry powder, diced jalapeno, and cayenne to give extra heat.

    1. Precook the turkey (Step 1) in a skillet. Add turkey and remaining ingredients to a slow cooker and cook for 4 hours on high or 6 to 8 hours on low. If you try it, let us know what you think!
